Hormones are to blame

Everyone knows about the existence of female menopause, on the eve of which the body begins its restructuring. Men also experience hormonal changes around age 40, which affect both their physical and psychological state. The body’s strength gradually decreases, and bad habits, stress, lack of sleep, and unhealthy diet begin to significantly affect health. If men do not make lifestyle adjustments and pay attention to potential issues, they are more susceptible to health threats.

Six threats

Threat 1. High cholesterol Studies show that men aged 30 to 40 years, even with slightly elevated cholesterol, subsequently have a high risk of cardiovascular disease. It is necessary to control cholesterol every year and avoid foods that raise it—especially those with high-fat content.

Threat 2. Joint damage and arthritis Chronic joint pain at the age of 40 can signal the onset of diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They can be triggered by genetic predisposition, pre-existing sports injuries, excess body weight, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Threat 3. Stress and depression Turning 40 is an important stage in a man's life. But this age can be accompanied by a fair share of mental turmoil. Emotional turmoil (such as family problems or parenting), compounded by stress at work, can lead to depression, anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks, and hypertension.

Threat 4. Aging and sleep disturbance At age 40, the quality of sleep deteriorates. This can be caused by an enlarged prostate, overactive bladder, or hypertension. It is important to make a habit of sleeping 7-8 hours straight every night to keep your health in check.

Threat 5. Excess weight Being overweight is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease and stroke. To reduce this risk, the World Health Organization recommends that men over the age of 40 engage in 30 minutes of walking 5 days a week or cardio exercise for at least 75-150 minutes weekly.

Threat 6. Unhealthy habits Alcohol and tobacco use contribute to the rapid development of dangerous diseases such as lung cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, and hepatitis. At age 40, it is especially important for men to reconsider their lifestyles and give up these self-destructive habits to improve their quality of life.

At age 40, it is very important for men to exercise to keep their muscles toned and maintain strength. Strenuous physical activity stimulates the production of testosterone, which has a positive effect on men's health.

Stay ahead of the game

To avoid late detection of any serious diseases, make it a rule to have an annual checkup and check vital indicators. Your doctor may order some of the following:

  • General blood test
  • Basic biochemical blood test
  • Testosterone level test
  • ECG
  • Ultrasound of the internal organs and the great vessels of the neck
  • Ultrasound of the scrotum
