To reduce high cholesterol, it’s most important to reduce animal fat and simple carbohydrates in your diet. You should eat more polyunsaturated fats (vegetable oil, nuts), fiber, and complex carbohydrates (vegetables, grains, bran).
What can you eat?
- Bread—no more than 7 oz per day. Can be replaced with dietary bran bread.
- Vegetables—at least 14 oz daily, stewed and raw.
- Meat: chicken, turkey, lean beef.
- Fish: hake, haddock, cod, pollock. Boil or bake meat and fish with no sour cream, mayonnaise, or any other fat.
- Only low-fat milk and fermented milk products are allowed, in limited quantities.
- Cook dishes without salt, and do not add salt to ready-made food.
What is not allowed?
- Processed meat, including sausages, boiled pork, bacon.
- Sweet cream products, chocolates and sweets, baked goods, cookies. It is advised to limit sugar intake.
